LLP – Secondary 2
Love Our Community
As students move from Secondary 1 to Secondary 2, the theme of LLP spirals upwards from “Love Our School” to “Love Our Community”. In order for our students to better understand the problem of the aging population in Singapore, our school partnered St Luke’s Eldercare Centre where students underwent a 2 hour befriending session with the elderly residents there. Prior the visit, students were trained for several weeks to plan and organize activities for the elderly. Here, students acquired the basic skills to interact with the elderly and also gained a better understanding of the needs of this group of individuals. With this knowledge in mind and progressive reflection, students painstakingly crafted and fine-tuned activities to ensure that the physical limitations of the elderly were accommodated. Students were reaffirmed in their efforts when they visited the elderly and brought smiles to their face for an entire afternoon through the performances, activities and games they planned.
In May, they welcomed the elderly back on Inter-Generation (IG) Day when our school hosted 200 elderly residents from Saint Luke’s Eldercare centres for a day of performances, interactive games, activities and competitions; an event which took them a whole term to plan. Each student partnered an elderly resident and took care of him or her throughout the whole event. At the end of the day, the elderly residents were treated to a sumptuous lunch; something rare which they enjoyed. Throughout the whole activity, all the elderly were meticulously cared for by our students.
