Training for the annual National Schools Cross Country and Track and Field Championships is physically and mentally demanding. During the months leading to the competition, our runners spent countless hours burning their soles in various locations ranging from the school compound, Toa Payoh Stadium, Bishan Stadium, Kallang Practice Track and MacRitchie Reservoir. On top of footwork drills that focus on developing the team’s muscular endurance, stamina and strength, the runners also unite as a team to clock seemingly insurmountable mileage and run their hearts out during high intensity intervals.
2016 has been a fruitful year. The team bagged a total of 3 medals; 1 Gold and 2 Silvers. In the 1500m Racewalk, Bendemeer dominated the race track with Shantel Chua achieving podium finish, coming in 2nd, with a timing of 08:03:32 while Dora Shoo blazed past the finishing line to claim the gold medal with a timing of 07:32:70 seconds. Dora also broke her own electronically-timed record set during her heats earlier this year, which stood at 07:53.42! For the ‘B’ Division 1500m Racewalk (Boys), Chu Meng Hong demonstrated tenacity amidst fierce competition and pulled out a victory literally seconds from the finishing line, winning the silver medal with a timing of 07:09.74. There were also several breakthrough performances from the 4 X 100 m (boys) where our quartet consisting of Andy, Jia Kai, Nicky and Meng Hong pushed through to the semi-finals. Nicky also overcame difficult odds to land a spot in the semi-finals for the 400m hurdles!
Cross Country is not an individual event. The teachers and coach aim to inculcate values of teamwork, mental resilience and sportsmanship in the team. When the going gets tough, it is always inspiring to see the team spur each other on (while gasping for breath) and look to one another for support and encouragement.
Moving ahead, as the team gears up to shave minutes and seconds off their personal best, we look forward to bringing glory to the school in 2017. From each his best!
